Often the importance of the   lighting chosen for living spaces is overlooked. Since the entire ambience of a living space is determined by the lighting, lighting should be given as much consideration as the furniture we choose.Create a project folder with a master plan. Include a picture of the room, swatches of fabric, paint chips and all the product  information you gather along the way.

Finding the right interior lighting is all about defining your living space,
identifying the various needs of the room and creating key focal points. Dimmers are excellent additions to all of your living quarters giving you control of the ambience in the room. For a living room you will most likely incorporate the following: recessed lighting around the perimeter, a central fixture for general lighting, accent lighting highlighting focal points and table or floor lamps for specific tasks such as reading.

Once you know what your living space requires the fun part is making your selection. Current trends embrace an old world feel with dominant materials such as copper and brass. Great ways to introduce splashes of color and personality to a living space is utilizing materials such as glass and artsy mini pendants when choosing accent lighting.

Lighting is not replaced as often as most interior design elements so do your homework, take your time and find something you just fall in love with!

Leathers, tweeds, flannels, hound’s tooth and all things nice are what 2012 interiors are made of. The 2012 look evokes a sense of opulence, elegance and sophistication. Somewhat masculine in nature expect to see this look softened with rich plum and tangerine floral prints.

It comes as no surprise that Pantone’s choice for this year is Tangerine Tango, a vivacious reddish orange hue that will boost the energy in any living space. TangerineTango is a striking color that is a little seductive and a little exotic making it a playful tool to implement in table linen, pillows and home accents.

The grownup textiles for 2012 leave a lot of room for home accents that are eccentric, exotic and unique. Timeless accents that capture the natural feel of wood and metals will be a hot commodity to complement interior design choices. Tasteful lighting instantly lifts the atmosphere of any living space to something quite classy. Iron and crystal combinations will quickly add pizzazz.

Generally spoken orange is considered to be conservative, let Tangerine Tango bring the drama and excitement right into your living spaces! Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
Tim

Pillow Talk

The greatest accessory for any living space is a throw pillow. Throw pillows add depth to living spaces and when chosen correctly can easily transform the entire room.

The first rule of thumb in understanding the impact of your choice in throw pillows is to consider the size of the pillows. The standard pillow size is 18 inches and if you want to create a casual feel oversized pillows are a great way to go. Oversized pillows are usually 24 inches. Rectangular oversized pillows
can be utilized to add something unusual to décor choices.

An odd number of pillows add an artful flair to the space. A living space instantly becomes interesting by combining a matched pair of square solids that contrast with the color of the sofa, adding an oddly shaped pillow and polishing it with two patterned or embellished outliers that reference either the color of your upholstery or the color of your solid pillows.

When aiming to create a modern look use an odd number of bigger sized throw pillows. Most often “less is more” so don’t go overboard on colors and choose simple patterns to avoid your throw pillows from dominating the space.

An eclectic feel is created when items seem “harmoniously mismatched”. By far the most popular trend, the eclectic look keeps living spaces comfortable and inviting. Rooms gain character with this collection of pillow sizes, colors, fabric and patterns. To pull the room together in harmony ensure that your
choice in colors reflect each other throughout the living space.

Aah! Pleasant days and cooler nights that denote the end of summer as we gear up for fall. Most of us are ready for interior color changes but not quite ready for the oranges and browns associated with fall.

While the clean lines of retro and French influences are here to stay in 2011, there are seemingly timeless trends that are easily tied into home interiors that maintain a rustic elegance. Utilizing patterns can really pull a room together. Mostly popular in rugs, customizing sofas and chairs are increasingly growing in popularity; this sudden growth is largely due to the surprisingly affordability and the ability to find the style and colors that match your own living space.

Interior accents remain the most popular choice to add character to living spaces. A few new pieces with the changing season makes the whole room feel new. Bold art pieces and accent furniture pieces become great conversation pieces as entertaining friends in the coming months move inside. A popular 2011 trend is clear glass pieces. Coffee tables with partial glass tabletops help you maintain warmth and a level of spaciousness within your living space.

As the changing season is mostly recognized by the temperature changes for the moment changing your interior colors can transform your living spaces completely! Timeless colors like neutrals and browns will always be popular to create a rustic feel. The 2011 fall trends also introduce dramatic color combinations such as black and white. In the coming winter months adding a pillow in black and white hounds tooth will prove trendy and the texture will add warmth. It looks like purple will reign supreme this fall with darker purples to create more drama in living spaces.

Summer is in full swing and filled with the enjoyment  of outdoor activities with our friends and family. Entertaining friends and family at your home are times when great memories are made and getting ready to host your guests outside shouldn’t be a hassle. There are simple ways to get ready for these engagements and most importantly remember that the key to great outdoor entertaining is simple food, great company and a great atmosphere.

One valuable trick is to cover your table with plain craft paper. Ranging in color it serves as a great color backdrop. By wrapping it around the sides and taping it to the bottom of your tabletop will ensure that it does not blow away and clean up becomes a breeze! Plush colorful pillows will compliment your table cover and encourage your guests to linger around the table. An umbrella offers shade and also defines your outdoor eating area. Floating tea light candles and flowers in a glass bowl with colored water offer a fuss-free centerpiece with striking effect.

Choosing a theme creates ambience and serving dishes for your food items can range depending on the theme you have in place. A collection of colorful eclectic bowls and plates keep the atmosphere casual. Tissue or cloth napkins that compliment some of the colors of your serving dishes will
offer unity to your setting.

Keeping food simple is key. There are a few small touches that will keep your guests comfortable and take some burden off you as the host. Add two tables off to the side of your eating space. Decorate both tables with the same theme but toned down from your main seating area. Utilize one table
as a drinking stand, where lemonade and refreshments are ready to go. The other table is used as a food-serving table. Food plates such as cheese platters can be simplified by using food markers to identify the different types of cheese served. These touches will allow guests to help themselves
while you are attending to other guests.
